Increased Activity Increases Risk of Injury

This is obvious, of course.

I was out to play ultimate frisbee last night and during warm-up/practice managed to both sprain my ankle (mild sprain) and pull a groin muscle.  I didn’t think too much of the sprain at the time because it didn’t immediately affect my performance, but the groin pull certainly did.  This led me to sit out the game, which was really frustrating as I really wanted to play.  I also didn’t want to make either injury worse than it already was.

Icing the groin has certainly helped, but this morning my ankle is rather sore.  I’ve sprained my ankle before and it took nearly two years before full range-of-motion returned.  I’m determined that it will not take that long this time, because I really want to keep playing ultimate – it’s just that fun!

Ultimate Fun

I’ve been naughty in the last month, not walking regularly, but it is mostly because I’ve been working rather physical jobs.  One job most recently was preparing concrete forms – they are heavy!

Recently, though, I’ve started playing Ultimate Frisbee.  What a hoot!  I got in to this through the Calgary Outdoor Club (COC), and hopefully will be doing more different things soon.  I joined because (a) it’s free, (b) it’s a great way to meet new people, and (c) I need to lose some weight.  I totally recommend joining up, but just be warned: they can be strict when it comes to unexplained no-shows.

I went for a nice walk up and around the southern part of Arbour Lake and Crowfoot Station tonight.  A great walk, and now that I have tunes again it is a little easier.

I walked yesterday a couple times.  I didn’t worry about the GPSr and step counting, because I had a specific destinations in mind (pub and home).  First I walked from home in Ranchlands to Brentwood train station.  Approximately 5 km and it took me about an hour to do.  Unfortunately I left a little later than I had intended, so got to the pub late.  But later, I walked from Ming on 17th Avenue SW to Banff Trail train station.  This was about 6.5 km, but I didn’t time it.  I did have music, though, so that helps to keep my pace up to an average of about 6 km/hr.  The route I followed is available at gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3821835.  The only reason I stopped here, really, is because my heel was starting to get a little sore and was affecting my stride and comfort level.  I don’t want no stinkin’ blisters!

Working vs. Walking

I’ve not been going for walks the last few days for a couple of reasons.  One: the weather sucks.  Two: I’ve been working at a warehouse in south Calgary.  While I was there, I was more than active enough to make up for the missed walks.  Unfortunately I had to stop, because my arm was sore to the point that I could not support much load on it.  But the weather is supposed to improve over the next couple days, and as my muscles recover I’ll get back to walking and posting.  Not that I’m opposed to walking in the rain – I’m quite happy to do that – I just have to physically recover from the warehouse job first.

Went for a walk in the northwest area today. This was the longest walk I’ve logged so far, and it felt great! When I took my hoodie off at home, my shirt was soaked. Temperatures were up to 20 °C, but there were and are storm clouds moving in and the winds were rather cool. As soon as I get the GPSr track processed I will post a map of the route I took.  No pictures from this trek.
